Do you know this house? (4th Day in the States)

Do you know this house? It is a hogan. A hogan is the primary traditional home of the Navajo people. There are two main hogans: The male hogan and the female hogan. The hogan in the picture is a female Hogan. A female hogan houses the Navajo family and is larger than a male hogan where ceremonial rituals take place. Hogans have wooden frames; packed clay or mud seals the frame, providing insulation in winter and keeping the heat out in summer. Hogan in the Navajo language means "home place." A hogan should have an entrance facing east and a smoke hole and chimney hole at the top. The doorway or opening should face east so the sun's rays of the morning can go directly into the inner part of the home. The sun also carries thoughts, planning and materialistic things of value. The materialistic things of value are the four hard stones: White bead from the east, Turquoise from the south, Abalone from the west, and Black jet from the north. When the sun goes directly overhead at noon, it shines through the smoke hole. It also carries materialistic things of necessity, variety of food, thinking and philosophy of every day life.(Information Source Vanderbilt University)
